As the waters continue to rise and the storm makes its way inland, tropical depression Florence continues to displace families and destroy homes. At this point, 17 people have been killed, more than 500,000 homes are without power and flooding is still a major issue. More than 400 people were rescued from New Bern, NC alone and Florence has dumped more than 30 inches of water since Friday.
If your heart aches like ours, and you’re looking for a way to help, there are a few things you can do. Charity Navigator lists high-rated charities currently responding to Florence’s aftermath. If you want to do something, there are plenty of ways to help Florence’s victims. (You can even make a donation through your Amazon Alexa.)
Text a donation
Make a donation to the American Red Cross on their website or text “FLORENCE” to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
Donate directly to North Carolina
Governor Roy Cooper set up the North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund, which will help offset the financial needs of Florence’s victims.
Donate to South Carolina
The One SC Fund, which provides grants to nonprofits to fund relief, has created a fund to help South Carolinians affected by Florence.
GoFundMe
Here, you can donate directly to specific causes. Victims and volunteers have created campaigns that range from disaster relief for New Bern to funding animal rescues.
Help educators
The National Education Association is asking for donations to help educator and schools affected by Florence.
Diaper Bank of North Carolina
The Diaper Bank of NC, the only statewide diaper bank in NC, is working on distributing diapers, feminine hygiene products and supplies for the elderly. You can donate online, drop off necessities, volunteer to prep disaster kits or donate items via Amazon.
Focus on the kids
Save the Children’s priority is to deliver portable cribs, wipes, toys and other supplies to evacuation shelters across NC.
Donate blood
Even if you’re not a local, giving blood is always a great way to help. Find your local blood donation center.
Donate to the Cajun Navy
The Cajun Navy, volunteer groups made up of private boat owners, EMTs and firefighters who help search and rescue, are asking for donations to help fuel and food costs.
Help affected animals
Countless animals have been left without proper shelter and are in need of fostering or adoption. When shelters reach capacity during natural disasters, sometimes they’re forced to euthanize animals. A number of shelters have rescued animals from the Carolinas, and are asking for donations: The Atlanta Humane Society, Charleston Animal Society, American Humane and Humane Society of the United States.
Write letters
Looking for other ways to help beyond donating money? Encourage the kids to write handwritten notes of support and thanks to local police, firefighters and staff and volunteers at hospitals, schools and churches in the areas affected by the hurricane.
