Starting this week, Uber Eats customers in Jersey City can have their orders delivered by robots.
The service seems pretty easy to use. When you’re in the Uber Eats app, check to see if the restaurant participates in the program. If so, you can choose if you’d like a traditional courier or the new robot to deliver your meal.
You can track the robot’s location in real-time in the app, and when it arrives, you’ll get a notification. Tap “unlock” to open the hatch and grab your order. The robot will wait up to 10 minutes for you to come grab your grub.
Right now, the service is available from 11 am to 9 pm in Jersey City only, including Hamilton Park, the downtown area and the waterfront. The trial restaurants include Jiang Nan, Rumi Turkish Grill, Downtown Yogurt Jersey City, Gulp, Amiya and Short Grain – with more restaurants (and more cities) to be added soon.
Don’t worry about the winter weather we’ve been having: Avride’s autonomous delivery robots have been tested to operate in snow, rain and sub-freezing temperatures – it sounds like the Postal Service! Each robot has a range of 31 miles, on one charge, and can travel up to 5 mph. The robot’s chassis provides traction on wet roads, and the combination of data from various sensors makes sure it can move in any type of weather.
There’s a bit of a savings, too, because tips will be charged for robot deliveries. There’s no extra delivery fee for using the robot, either.
And you can still rate your experience in the app like with any typical Uber Eats delivery.
Avride’s delivery robots are currently available in Austin and Dallas, so this is the first time this technology is available on the East Coast.
