The Somerset County Park Commission Environmental Education Center (EEC) will present the 12th annual “Project E.A.R.T.H.” (Environment • Awareness • Responsibility • Teaching • Hope) celebration on Sunday, April 28, 2019 from 12:00 Noon to 4:30 P.M. at the Environmental Education Center, 190 Lord Stirling Road in Basking Ridge, New Jersey.

“Project E.A.R.T.H – Swamp Search!” is an exciting family-oriented scavenger hunt on the Environmental Education Center trails through Lord Stirling Park that will educate participants about the importance of the Great Swamp as an ecological and recreational resource.

Participants will head out on the trails starting at 12:00 Noon to locate EEC Naturalists who will provide clues and fascinating environmental facts that will help answer scavenger hunt questions. Returning by 3:00 P.M., participants who have answered all their questions correctly will be randomly selected from the group of eligible finalists to play the EEC challenge game at 3:15 P.M. for exciting prizes.

The trails can be muddy so appropriate footwear is recommended.  The scavenger hunt may be cancelled if there are thunderstorms.

Following the Scavenger Hunt, at 3:45 P.M., Rick Mikula, “The Butterfly Guy,” will present an amazing collection of live and mounted butterflies and moths. The indoor program will be held rain or shine.

Individuals, families, friends, scouts, and groups of all ages are invited to join the fun. All the activities for the day are free.

The Somerset County Park Commission Environmental Education Center is located within Lord Stirling Park, in the Basking Ridge section of Bernards Township, and is nestled within 500 acres of the western portion of the Great Swamp Basin of the Passaic River. A swamp vivarium, and an environmentally based library are located within the Center itself.

“The Great Swamp Experience” on the lower level at the EEC features interactive displays, vignettes, taxidermy, and archeological artifacts highlighting the history and ecology of the Great Swamp. The exhibit is open 7 days a week from 9:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Admission is free.

Information on this event and other Somerset County Park Commission activities may be found on the Internet at or by calling the Environmental Education Center at 908-722-1200, ext. 5002.
