The Somerset County Park Commission is seeking volunteers to assist with “Sourlands Stewardship Day,” a climbing-focused clean-up day on Saturday, November 2, 2019 from 9:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. The event will stage at the Sourlands Mountain Preserve, 421 East Mountain Road, Hillsborough, New Jersey.
The clean-up day will focus on three main bouldering areas Southfield, Devil’s Half Acres, and Half Moon. Volunteers will line trails with logs to visually define trails and reduce human impact in a sensitive environment, clean chalk marks off boulders, and pick up trash. In an effort to bridge the gap between indoor and outdoor climbers, volunteers may also be educated on proper outdoor bouldering etiquette while assisting with clean up.
The event is offered in partnership with local climbers Chris Redmund of Gunks Apps and Brian Mancuso, with support from Access Fund, REI of Princeton, Gravity Vault of Flemington, Organic Climbing, and the NJ Climber’s Coalition.
“With more climbers using the Sourlands it is important to take care of the geological features that the area has to offer and ensure its sustainability for future generations. This is an exciting event that will bring the climbing community together, build pride for the region, and clean up the park. It’s a win-win for all involved,” commented Carrie Springer, Manager of Environmental Science for the Park Commission.
Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older and should register by contacting Carrie Springer at firstname.lastname@example.org or 908.722.1200 Ext.5324. All registered volunteers will receive a chance to win gear and swag donated by REI, Gravity Vault, Access Fund, and Organic Climbing.
