SUMMARY:Allan Rohan Crite: Neighborhood
DESCRIPTION:Born in North Plainfield and raised in Boston\, Allan Rohan Crite (1910-2007) created a rich visual record of Black life in 20th-century urban America\, revealing a sense of community that resonates across time and place. \nThe new exhibition offers a sweeping overview of his long career as a storyteller and cultural historian who chronicled the everyday lives of his friends and neighbors. \nAllan Rohan Crite: Neighborhood features 65 paintings and works on paper\, exploring themes meaningful to the artist: neighborhood\, community and religion. \nOver a career that spans eight decades\, Crite documented the multicultural\, multiracial and multigenerational communities of Boston\, as well as historic social and economic changes that transformed the nation in the latter half of the 20th century. \nCrite’s vibrant paintings of neighborhood scenes from the 1930s and 1940s are some of his most celebrated works. While many of his contemporaries in New York portrayed Black subjects through two stereotypical extremes—famous entertainers or anonymous figures—Crite chose his middle-class neighbors in Boston. He captured their everyday activities: children learning and playing\, mothers and babies meeting in the park\, men reading the news on the corner\, people commuting and at the office. \nA dedicated Episcopalian\, Crite often portrayed religious scenes that are common art historical subjects. The exhibition includes a full set of his Stations of the Cross: I-XIV\, an important Biblical narrative that encourages Christians to explore the themes of suffering\, sacrifice and redemption. Crite also placed Biblical figures in familiar\, contemporary settings. His well-known Streetcar Madonna\, along with two other images of Madonna and Child navigating the public transit system\, inspires viewers to experience spirituality beyond the sacred walls of the church. \nFrom the 1950s onward\, Crite experimented with new techniques on paper\, continuing to explore the meaning of community—particularly as the physical landscape around him shifted. He documented the detrimental impact of urban renewal—what he called “urban removal”—and the gentrification that displaced long-established Black and multicultural neighborhoods. \nCrite lived the community-centered values he depicted. His home was a gathering space for scholars\, historians\, artists and community leaders. That legacy continues in the current work of Johnetta Tinker and Susan Thompson\, who—like their mentor\, Crite—capture Black communities grounded in lived experience\, rather than stereotypes. \nFour quilts from their 2021 series Deeply Rooted in the NeighborHOOD\, Homage to Allan Rohan Crite are included in the exhibition. \nAllan Rohan Crite: Neighborhood is complemented by free public programs: \n\nSparkNight: Centennial Black History Month Celebration and Spotlight on New Spring Exhibitions on February 12\nChoir performance on February 28\nArt Together family workshop on March 15\nCuratorial discussion “Conspicuous by Their Absence” on April 29.\n\nAllan Rohan Crite: Neighborhood is organized by the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum\, Boston\, Massachusetts. \nIn addition\, the Gardner Museum and Boston Athenaeum have co-published Allan Rohan Crite: Neighborhood Liturgy\, produced by Princeton University Press\, the first extensively researched\, fully illustrated\, career-spanning book about the artist. \nThe Zimmerli’s presentation is organized by Nicole Simpson\, Curator of Prints and Drawings. It is on view from February 11 through July 31. \nThe Zimmerli Art Museum is open Wednesday and Friday\, 11 am to 6 pm; Thursday\, 11 am to 8 pm; Saturday and Sunday\, 12-5 pm. DESCRIPTION:“Spirit of ’76: The Bicentennial” is a new exhibition presented as part of the New Jersey State Museum’s celebration of America’s 250th. \nThe exhibition examines the multitude of ways governments\, businesses\, and citizens reflected upon and marked the 200th anniversary of the nation’s independence. \nIn the midst of the turmoil of the early 1970s\, officials looked to the Bicentennial as an opportunity for Americans to forget their differences and rally together around pride and patriotism for their shared country. Celebrating the distinct look and feel of 1970s America\, the exhibition draws exclusively from the State Museum’s own collection\, the exhibition showcases an assortment of rarely seen artifacts and artworks produced 50 years ago for the Bicentennial. \nHighlights include the Kent Bicentennial Portfolio\, a collection of lithographs and screen prints commissioned from twelve artists including Jacob Lawrence and Robert Indiana\, whose visually-stunning works are responses to the prompt “what does independence mean to me?” \nHistorical artifacts include New Jersey state government-issued items like license plates and maps\, New Jersey-made flags\, commemorative medallions\, ceramic works by Trenton porcelain firms Cybis\, Boehm\, and Lenox; and a handcrafted album quilt from Princeton. \nThe exhibition also includes artworks and artifacts honoring the famed “Ten Crucial Days\,” the period between December 25\, 1776\, and January 3\, 1777\, when George Washington crossed the Delaware River near Trenton and turned the tide of the Revolutionary War. \nDates are February 14\, 2026\, through February 21\, 2027. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:In honor of the 250th birthday of the United States\, Eastern State announced a yearlong slate of free\, inclusive public programming. \nA Time for Liberty will explore the evolving meanings of liberty and justice in America through family-friendly festivals\, panel discussions with scholars and systems-impacted leaders\, pop-up exhibitions drawn from Eastern State’s archival collections\, and new online learning resources extending the experience to classrooms nationwide. \nIn the early days of the nation\, the idea for Eastern State emerged as a bold initiative to reform the criminal justice system. Built on a then-radical belief in human dignity and the capacity for change\, Eastern State became the nation’s first penitentiary and a powerful symbol of America’s evolving ideas about liberty\, justice\, and rehabilitation. \nHighlights of A Time for Liberty will include: \n\nThe Great Escape: Stories of Resistance and Creativity at Eastern State\, a weeklong program series from March 27 through April 5\, inviting visitors to discover stories of resilience\, creativity\, and resistance within one of America’s most influential prisons\, and to reflect on what those stories mean for our communities today. The Great Escape will feature Speakeasy and Tunnel Escape Mini Tours.\nPop-up talks on Al Capone and policing in Prohibition-era America.\nA sitewide\, interactive\, secret letter delivery activity.\nPhilly Saves: Adaptive Reuse of Sites of Memory and Trauma\, a May 2026 program\, will examine how people steward the physical legacy of democracy\, including prisons\, churches\, burial grounds\, schools\, and factories\, and how these sites can be reclaimed as spaces of civic dialogue\, healing\, and community.\nOn May 27\, Eastern State will kick off its annual Wednesday Nights series with a powerful interfaith dialogue on faith\, reentry\, and prison reform\, bringing together Jewish\, Christian\, and Muslim leaders to examine how religious traditions have shaped American approaches to rehabilitation\, moral responsibility\, and reintegration since the nation’s founding.\nOn July 2\, A Time for Liberty will celebrate the opening of Freedom through Faith: Judaism at Eastern State and Beyond\, a new exhibit that will reveal how religious freedom\, framed as “unalienable rights\,” was a foundational promise of the Declaration that was strongly represented and practiced inside America’s first penitentiary\, especially among its Jewish population. The exhibit will explore how faith sustained dignity\, community\, and moral agency for incarcerated people\, demonstrating how liberty of conscience persisted even within confinement.\n\nThroughout 2026\, A Time for Liberty will feature numerous Justice 101 conversations focused on liberty and justice\, including a June event with Professor Hasan Jeffries on the history of Juneteenth and its meaning today. \nEastern State will also participate in 52 Weeks of Firsts on October 3 in partnership with the Philadelphia Historic District\, spotlighting its legacy as the nation’s first penitentiary. \nAdditional partners\, program details\, and a full calendar of events will be announced throughout 2026. \n
