Police in multiple NJ counties are investigating incidents involving people being struck by Orbeez gel water beads with a pellet-type gun. The beads grow when placed in water and when frozen can cause serious harm.

The disturbing trend of shooting the beads from a moving car is known on TikTok as the “Orbeez Challenge.” As part of this challenge, people shoot the water beads at other from a vehicle with an airsoft gun or similar type of gun. The gel water beads are supposed to burst on impact, but they can cause serious injuries especially if they are frozen.

Police were on the case in Hamilton and Westwood where injuries were reported. And across the country law enforcement is warning people against participating in such a challenge, as those caught trying to injure someone or damage property could face criminal and/or motor vehicle charges.

In Westfield, a woman reported that she was shot with plastic pellets. In Sarasota, Florida, police were alerted to an unsubstantiated threat of an “Orbeez Challenge” shooting planned at a county fair.

Police are asking parents to speak to their children about not participating in these dangerous TikTok challenges.

Meanwhile, the state’s Attorney General has launched an investigation into the potentially harmful effects of TikTok on youngsters.
