Claire’s Recalled Its JoJo Siwa Makeup After It Tested Positive for Asbestos

This isn’t the first time makeup from the popular chain has had traces of asbestos in it.

Claire’s, a one-stop shop for  sparkly and cute accessories, is caught up in an asbestos scandal once again. The company is recalling its JoJo Siwa Makeup Set after it tested positive for asbestos. The Beauty Plus Global Contour Effects Palette 2 was also found to be contaminated.

Claire’s Stores Inc. recalled the JoJo kit after trace amounts of asbestos fibers were found in the kit’s eyeshadow. The FDA warned shoppers to toss both kits, and the company announced that it would provide a full refund to anyone who bought the products.

Despite the FDA’s warning, a Claire’s spokesperson said the company still stood behind their products’ safety, arguing that small trace amounts of asbestos are acceptable in Europe and Canada based on their own regulations. Claire’s also took to Twitter, saying, “The recent test results the FDA have shared with us show significant errors. Specifically, the FDA test reports have mischaracterized fibers in the products as asbestos fibers. Despite our efforts to discuss these issues with the FDA, they insisted on moving forward with their release.”

Maybe we’d have a little more sympathy if Claire’s didn’t have an already cringe-worthy history of selling contaminated kids’ cosmetics. In 2017, 17 makeup items were recalled after a mom sent her kid’s makeup kit to be tested by a lab. And last  March, Claire’s recalled three additional products due to asbestos contamination.

Personally, we like to think it shouldn’t be too difficult to make asbestos-free makeup…but a mom can dream!
