Fall is in the air—where did the summer go? (Answer: It’s actually still here until the 22nd.) But September is such a gorgeous month. It’s still warm out, and there are tons of fun things to do with preschoolers all over the state. We’ve rounded up our top picks so you don’t have to scramble.

  1. Days Out with Thomas: Train enthusiasts will never forget this day with their favorite engine! Strasburg Railroad in Pennsylvania hosts this event through September 4, and tickets are $21 for ages 2 and up. In addition to the train ride, there are activities available open to your little conductor, too. Buy tickets in advance.

  2. Hippo Feed and Talk: The Camden Aquarium’s Hippo Haven offers visitors the chance to get up close and personal with Button and Genny, two Nile hippos. Observe a training session and watch the hippos eat treats. Shows are offered daily from September 1- September 30, but check online for times.

  3. Fire Truck Rides: Has your child ever wanted to ride atop a firetruck? The Mendham Fire Department gives him a chance. Celebrate Labor Day weekend with a ride from September 2-September 4 from 6:30-9:00 pm at Borough Park.

  4. 14th Annual Insect Festival: Taking place on September 10 from 1-4 pm at the Mercer Educational Gardens, the Insect Festival celebrates all things crawly. Experts will help children learn through games and activities. There are also hayrides and a bug hunt in the meadow. A $3 donation is suggested.

  5. Peppa Pig Live!: Join Peppa and her family at Mayo in Morristown for a day of summer fun. Tickets range from $29-$59. The show takes place on September 17th at 5:00 pm and is recommended for ages 2-5.

  6. Oasis Pirate Adventures: Come dressed as a pirate and be prepared to hunt for treasure! Little buccaneers are invited to Oasis Family Farm on September 17 and 18 to help Captain Lucky find hidden treasure all over the farm. There are also free games and activities, but admission is $14.95 each.

  7. Fall Festival at Historic Allaire: Celebrate fall at Allaire Village. Participate in 19th century children’s games and horse and wagon rides.The festival takes place on September 24 from 12:00-4:00 pm. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 5-12.

  8. Touch a Truck Day: Rutherford’s Annual Touch a Truck Day lets your preschoolers experience vehicles such as ambulances, tow trucks, sanitation vehicles, landscaping trucks and more. The event takes place on September 25 from 1:00-4:00. In addition to the truck touch, there are snacks and games open to the public.
