Barbie Launches New Politically Active Dolls for the 2020 Election

The diverse set of four dolls aims to inspire young girls to learn about taking an active role in politics and leadership.

With less than a hundred days until Election Day, Barbie has set off on her seventh campaign to inspire young girls that they can—and should—be in office. 2020’s Career of the Year set includes four dolls: the candidate, campaign manager, campaign fundraiser and voter.

The new set features dolls of different ethnicities to show that girls can be leaders no matter their background. “Since 1959, Barbie has championed girls and encouraged them to be leaders whether in the classroom, community or someday, of the country,” said Lisa McKnight, SVP and Global Head of Barbie & Dolls, Mattel, in a press release for the collection. “With less than a third of elected leaders in the U.S. being women, and Black women being even less represented in these positions, we designed the Barbie Campaign Team with a diverse set of dolls to show all girls they can raise their voices. Our goal is to remove barriers to leadership by giving girls the tools to imagine and play out their future roles.”

In this career campaign, Barbie is also collaborating with She Should Run, a non-partisan, non-profit organization that supports girls in using their voices to advocate for issues that matter to them and provides them with the tools to participate and make active change.

In conjunction with the doll set, Barbie and She Should Run launched the “Have Her Lead” campaign which provides adults with resources to start a conversation with the young girls in their lives about leadership and political activism. There are also printable activity sheets that your young candidate can download to draft her campaign speech, cast her vote and more.

The full Barbie Campaign Team Set is available for $39.99 from major online retailers.
