The bacteria found in the diapers is known as Burkholderia Cepacia, or B. Cepacia. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) reports that Burkholderia cepacia is commonly found in soil and water and usually poses no risk to healthy people. The bacteria may adversely affect those with compromised immune systems however — and individuals suffering from diseases such as chronic lung cancer, weakened immune systems or Cystic Fibrosis are much more likely to get an infection. The symptoms “vary widely, ranging from no symptoms at all to serious respiratory infections.” Complaints have included rash, irritation, infections, fever, gastrointestinal issues and respiratory issues.
The investigation started with reports of discoloration and an odd odor coming from the wipes, and one report of irritation which first alerted the company to their need for a possible recall. Microbial testing revealed that B. cepacia was present in many of the wipes. The Pennsylvania company has halted all shipment and manufacturing while the investigation continues.
