The New Jersey Division of AAA Northeast is headquartered in Florham Park and has branch offices in Florham Park, Roxbury, Union and West Caldwell. AAA Northeast provides automotive, travel, insurance, financial and educational services to residents of Essex, Morris and Union Counties.
Since its inception in 1902, safety on the road has remained one of AAA’s core initiatives. In recognition of the association’s 100th anniversary in 2002, AAA created the Seated, Safe & Secure campaign to raise awareness of child passenger safety. In the 13 years since, AAA has worked to enact stronger child restraint laws, and has also been active at the national level and in local communities promoting child passenger safety.
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children, mainly due to misuse and nonuse of car seats. In fact, four out of five car seats are used incorrectly. Common mistakes include not using the correct seat for your child’s height/weight; incorrect installation; chest clip not in the correct position; and loose harness straps. The best protection a parent can offer their child is to use a correctly-installed child seat every time the child is in the car. Use of child safety seats can reduce injury by 71-82% for infants and booster seats can reduce the risk of injury up to 45%. To educate parents on the proper use of child safety seats, AAA – in partnership with the Union County Police Department – offers FREE child safety seat checks at the First Aid Squad in Garwood (401 Second Avenue). When considering the best car seat to buy for your child, remember that the best seat is one that fits your child, your car and your budget, and is one that you will use every trip, every time.

4 STEPS FOR KIDS:
Rear-Facing – Use rear-facing car seats in the back seat from birth until about age 2, or until the child reaches the maximum height/weight limits of the seat (limits vary by manufacturer; consult the owner’s manual). AAA supports recommendations by the American Academy of Pediatrics that children remain rear-facing until the age of 2.
Forward-Facing – Use forward-facing seats in the back seat from about age 2 to about age 4, or until the child reaches the maximum height/weight limits of the seat (limits vary by manufacturer; consult the owner’s manual). It’s best to use a seat with a 5-point harness, which offers the greatest protection.
Booster-Facing – Use booster seats in the back seat from about age 4 until your child is at least 4′ tall, which is generally between age eight and 12.
Vehicle Seat Belts – Seat belts fit properly when, while sitting to the back of the seat, the child’s knees bend comfortably at the edge of the seat, the shoulder belt crosses between the neck and arm (not across the soft tissue of the neck) and the lap belt sits firmly across the lap (over the thighs, not across the midsection).
HAVE YOUR CHILD’S CAR SEAT CHECKED FOR FREE – AAA and the Union County Police Department offer FREE child safety seat inspections every Wednesday and Thursday from 7:30 – 11 a.m. at the First Aid Squad in Garwood (401 Second Avenue). Certified child passenger safety technicians will check your child’s car seat for proper installation and use, as well as educate you on the correctly using your child seats.
