New Jersey’s first rail strike in over 40 years has brought New Jersey Transit’s train services to a standstill, affecting about 350,000 daily commuters. The strike, initiated by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, comes on the heels of failed contract negotiations with NJ Transit.
In response, NJ Transit has put a contingency plan in place for commuters. But this plan can only accommodate about 20 percent of regular rail passengers. Commuters are encouraged to work from home if possible and explore other transportation options.
Alternative Commuter Options
- All NJ Transit bus routes are operating on their regular schedules.
- Select bus routes near train lines have increased capacity during peak hours.
- Rail tickets and passes are being cross-honored on NJ Transit buses.

- PNC Bank Arts Center (Holmdel) to Port Authority Bus Terminal: 5-8 am

A shuttle bus is operating every 20 minutes between Newark Penn Station and the airport’s AirTrain station.
Events at MetLife Stadium, including Friday night’s Shakira concert:
- NJ Transit has canceled both train and bus services to MetLife Stadium during the strike.
- Coach USA’s 351 Meadowlands Express is providing shuttle service from the Port Authority Bus Terminal to MetLife Stadium. Buses run every 10 to 15 minutes, starting at 4:30 pm. Tickets must be purchased in advance via the Megabus website.
- Rideshare Services: Drop-off and pick-up zones are located in Lots D and E. Expect significant delays and higher pricing after events.
- Driving: Concertgoers are advised to carpool and arrive early due to expected heavy traffic.
