6 Things to Do in NYC this Memorial Day Weekend

If traffic to the Jersey Shore is too much to contend with you might consider taking public transit into New York City, where there’s lots to do over the long weekend. Here are a few ideas:

INTREPID MUSEUM

Tour a Ship During Fleet Week
It’s Fleet Week, which means active military ships will dock in Manhattan for the week while crews enter NYC to see the sights. You can tour ships docked on the West Side of Manhattan between 45th and 49th Streets, and at the Homeport Pier, on Staten Island. For details on where to see the ships, click here. The week goes through May 28 and you can take part in the 36th annual salute to our Armed Forces with a bunch of activities at The Intrepid Museum from May 24–27. Read more about it here.

Head to Luna Park in Coney Island
Come for coasters like the Thunderbolt, the Cyclone and Tony’s Express coaster plus Leti’s Treasure log flume, carnival-style games, and a range of dining options along the boardwalk to kick off the unofficial start of summer. Luna Park just opened a new go-kart attraction called Electric Eden Raceway, NYC’s first sustainable electric-powered go-karts, on May 24th.  Luna Park in Coney Island is open daily starting Memorial Day Weekend, and Coney Island Beach is also open for the season.

Take a Circle Line Sightseeing Cruise
Circle Line offers three daily cruises—Best of NYC Cruise, Landmarks Cruise, and Harbor Lights Cruise—offering views of the New York skyline from the water while serving up appetizers and cocktails. This Memorial Day Weekend, Circle Line is offering a military discount for active duty and retired service men and women. Get 50% off up to 4 tickets by showing a military ID at Pier 83 or Pier 16.

Experience Interactive Art
INTERis home to a series of interactive art experiences in Soho. Boasting two floors of over ten exhibits, you’ll want to check out the Immersion Dome, which is currently Northern Lights-themed. The exhibit is a mix of curated visuals, a guided audio experience, and interactive elements.

Take a Ride on NYC’s Only Floating Mexican Restaurant
La Barca Cantina is offering a brunch cruise on Memorial Day at 12:30 pm. The all-inclusive pre-fixe $99 ticket (a nice idea if you can book a sitter) includes an all-you-can-eat Mexican and American brunch buffet and bottomless mimosas and bellinis while you take in the sights of NYC.

Take a Lobster Dinner Cruise
North River Lobster Company, NYC’s only floating lobster and seafood restaurant, is open all Memorial Day Weekend with sailings Friday – Sunday at 1 pm, 3 pm, 5 pm, and 7 pm. Try a variety of lobster rolls including the cold Maine Lobster Roll, Connecticut Roll, and the 28-inch Shelley Roll plus raw bar options and signature cocktails.
