It's true, NJ is now home to the largest planetarium in the US, which opens Saturday, December 9.

Thanks to a $5 million donation, the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City will operate the largest planetarium in the US and fourth largest in the world.

Jennifer Chaltsty of Short Hills explains that she gave the science center its biggest donation in its history because of her passion for childhood education—particularly in STEM.

“As a former teacher, I know that education is life’s great equalizer,” Chalsty said. “I also know that if we hope to fill the tremendous need for more top quality STEM professionals, we have to start inspiring children and imbuing in them a lifelong love for these subjects. That is the mission of the Liberty Science Center and why I’m proud to support this great institution.”

The museum has updated its IMAX Theater (making the switch from film to digital) and added software that allows the theater to also function as a planetarium. The new planetarium has ten digital projectors, 400 seats and is roughly the same square footage as five average homes.
