Teach the Kids to Ski at These Nearby Mountains

They'll be soaring beyond the bunny hill in no time thanks to these lessons just for kids.

CAMELBACK MOUNTAIN RESORT

Camelback offers half-day programs for kids, plus beginner and private lessons. First-time skiers can learn to use equipment, stand, balance, walk and glide. Half-day lessons for ages 4-12 ($125-145) include a lift ticket, equipment rental and a two-and-a-half-hour lesson. Beginner’s lessons are 90 minutes for ages 4-12, and the price varies ($45-109) depending on whether you purchase a lift ticket and rent equipment. One-hour private lessons for ages 3-12 are available, too ($135).

Help them conquer the slopes with reservations for either all-ages private ($89-99), ages 4-6 children’s group ($39-44), ages 7 and up group ($44-49) or ages 6 and under Just For Me ($64) private lessons. Equipment is available for rent: skis ($29), boots ($19), poles ($5) or all three ($36).

Aside from private beginner’s lessons, your brood can join groups based on age. Explorers lessons for ages 4-6 ($89-135, add $25 for rentals) include lift ticket and a full day session also includes snack and lunch. Mountaineers for ages 7-12 ($89-135, add $25 for rentals) also include a lift ticket and a full day session also includes snack and lunch. These programs are designed for both first-timers and those coming back to improve their skills.

Your kids have a wide range of options: Go for private lessons are offered (ages 3 and up, $100/hour), or children’s daily programs like Snowmonsters, which is for ages 3-12 (ages 7-12 f or snowboarding) and teaches them basic skills like how to come to a complete stop and safely use a chairlift. The Snowmonsters program includes a lift ticket, rental equipment and lesson ($100).

MOUNT PETER

Kiddos ages 5 and older (ages 6 and up for snowboarding) with a lift ticket ($22-54) can join free hour-long lessons on select dates at the base of the mountain. They’ll be introduced to equipment, sliding movement, basic balance, stopping and direction changes. Pete's Pals, which caters for ages 4 and under, includes tuition, equipment, life ticket and hot chocolate ($90). Private lessons are available ($89/hour). Basin Camp is geared toward beginners (skiiers ages 5-11 and snowboarders ages 6-13) and includes a three-hour weekend lesson, plus equipment and ticket ($169-189).

MOUNTAIN CREEK

Neophyte skiers ages 6 and under are free with the purchase of an adult ticket ($79.99). One-hour private lessons are offered for ages 7 and under ($109/hour) and ages 8 and up ($129.99) with longer sessions available. Lessons do not include lift ticket or rental equipment. Kids lessons, for ages 4-7 ($89-109), and Kids Camp Full Day Lessons are available ($149-169).

SHAWNEE MOUNTAIN

Try the beginner ski package ($105), which includes a lift ticket, complete ski rental and group lesson. There’s also Skiwee for ages 4-6 and a three-hour Mountain Cruisers session for ages 7-15. Sessions are from 9:30 am-12:30 pm, 1:30-4:30 pm or for the entire day ($110-195). Specialty lessons include Skibaby, a one-hour lesson for three-year-olds which includes equipment ($80). Mommy & Me class is also for three-year-olds ($80), but doesn’t include equipment or lift tickets for adults.
