Teach the Kids to Ski at These Nearby Mountains

They'll be soaring beyond the bunny hill in no time thanks to these lessons just for kids.




Do they already know the ropes? Here's the scoop on skiing in and around NJ.


301 Resort Dr., Tannersville, PA

Camelback offers half-day programs for kids, plus beginner and private lessons. First-time skiers can learn to use equipment, stand, balance, walk and glide. Half-day lessons for ages 4-12 ($110- 129) include a lift ticket, equipment rental and a two-and-a-half-hour lesson. Beginner’s lessons are 90 minutes for ages 4-12, and the price varies ($35-99) depending on whether you purchase a lift ticket and rent equipment. One-hour private lessons for ages 3-12 are available, too ($119).


200 Campgaw Rd., Mahwah

Help them conquer the slopes with reservations for either all-ages private ($89), ages 4-6 children’s ($39), ages 7 and up group ($44) or ages 6 and under Just For Me ($59) lessons. Equipment is available for rent: skis ($29), boots ($19), poles ($5) or all three ($36).


64 Klein Ave., Hunter, NY

Aside from private beginner’s lessons, your brood can join groups based on age. Explorers lessons for ages 4-6 ($85-125, add $15 for rentals) include lift ticket, snack and lunch (full day only). Mountaineers for ages 7-12 ($85-125, add $15 for rentals) also include a lift ticket, snack and lunch (full day only). These programs are designed for both first-timers and those coming back to improve their skills.


434 Jack Frost Mountain Rd., White Haven, PA

Your kids have a wide range of options: ages 6 and under can grab a Scout Pass ($60) or try the Discovery Beginner Package which includes ticket, rental and lesson ($80-90/person) with your 13-and-upper. Lift tickets are available for adults ($50-60) and kids, both ages 7-17 ($35-45) and 6 and under ($10). Equipment rentals and helmets are extra ($27-35; $12). Private lessons are offered, as well as children’s daily programs like Snowmonsters, which is for ages 3-12 and teaches them to come to a complete stop and safely use a chairlift. The Snowmonsters program includes a lift ticket, rental equipment and lesson ($90-100).


51 Old Mt. Peter Rd., Warwick, NY

Kiddos ages 5 and older with a lift ticket ($30- 49) can join free hour-long lessons on select dates at the base of the mountain. They’ll be introduced to equipment, sliding movement, basic balance, stopping and direction changes. Private lessons are available for an hour ($89). Basin Camp is geared toward beginners and includes a three-hour weekend lesson for kids ages 5-11, plus equipment and ticket ($175).


200 Rte. 94, Vernon

Neophyte skiers ages 6 and under are free with the purchase of an adult ticket ($74). One-hour private lessons are offered for ages 8 and up ($129.99), two hours ($259.99) and longer sessions are available. Lessons do not include lift ticket or rental equipment. Group kid lessons are also available ($79.99-169.99).


401 Hollow Rd., East Stroudsburg, PA

Try the beginner ski package ($105), which includes a lift ticket, complete ski rental and group lesson. There’s also Skiwee for ages 4-6 and a three-hour Mountain Cruisers session for ages 7-15, which includes a custom boot fitting. Sessions are from 9:30 am-12:30 pm or 1:30-4:30 pm ($110). Specialty lessons include Skibaby, a one-hour lesson for three-year-olds which includes equipment ($80). Mommy & Me class is also for three-year-olds ($80), but doesn’t include equipment or lift tickets for adults.
