Valentine's Day Breakfasts You'll Heart

Heart-Fried PotatoesValentine's Day is on a Thursday this year, and what better way to start the day than with an easy and fun Valentine's Day breakfast? Here are five "I Heart You" ideas for a breakfast your kids will love—and they shouldn't be too much more work than a regular weekday breakfast:

1. Heart Fried Potatoes

Instead of home fries make heart fries! With a cookie cutter, cut our hearts from raw potatoes. Heat some oil in a skillet and fry the hearts the same as you would home-fried potatoes. If you tire of cutting out hearts, put a few heart potatoes on top of regular cubed or sliced potatoes. When I made these I chopped and fried the discards as well, then arranged them inside a heart shaped cookie cutter, removed the cutter, and was able to serve the breakfast potatoes in a (relatively) perfect heart shape.

2. Egg-in-a-Heart

Egg-in-a-Hole is a regular weekday breakfast at our house, so Egg-in-a-Heart was an easy variation to make. Take a regular slice of bread and use a heart shaped cookie cutter to cut-out a heart. Heat oil or butter in a skillet, put in the heart-cut-out bread and crack an egg into the heart in the middle, and fry as you like. Fry the cut-out bread heart as well, and serve together.

Strawberry Hearts

3. Heart Fruit Salad

As long as you're cutting hearts, keep going and cut hearts out of melon, mango, and banana for fruit salad or fruit kebabs. Tired of cutting out hearts? No problem—slice strawberries and just cut a small "V" at the top for perfect "natural" hearts. Add a side of yogurt for dipping, or sprinkle a little sugar on top.

And don't worry, if you don't have a heart-shaped cookie cutter, you wont need one making these last two Valentine's Day breakfast recipes:

4. Heart-Shaped Cinnamon Rolls

You can get the recipe for homemade cinnamon rolls from Pinch My Salt here, or just buy them ready-made in the can (I won't tell). Before baking, shape the rolls into a heart shape.

5. And last, a special Valentine's Breakfast doesn't need to be a lot of work.

Make pancakes or waffles, forget the heart-shaped cookie cutters, and just write a Valentine's Day message to your child in chocolate syrup—what could be sweeter?
