Celebrate Earth Day with Eco-Friendly Crafts

Recycled crayons in a heart shapeEarth Day is this Sunday, April 22, and it's the perfect time to help your children learn more about recycling, upcycling, and taking steps to care for the planet. Here are a few environmentally friendly crafts and projects you can do to celebrate the day:

No need to use paper cups! The New York Mom shares how to add chalkboard paint to regular drinking glasses—write cheery messages to your kids or add each child's name to the glass so they use one glass per day! And, think of the fun you can have with these glasses at your next party!

Random Handprints (my blog) tells how to take old, broken crayons and repurpose them into fun-shaped new crayons (using muffin tins for molds). (Shown in photo.)

Craftaholics Anonymous has a tutorial for DIY bottle cap candles, made by recycling common household items, including crayons.

The Crafty Crow has lots of ideas for recycling crafts, including how to make recycled robots and how to create a terrarium.

Mom It Forward provides directions for creating bracelets from recycled belts, a fantastic project for tweens wanting to make a fashion statement.

Babalisme has a printable, illustrated Earth Day Pledge with blank spaces for kids to fill in their ideas about how to help care for the earth.

There are lots more craft projects, books, and other Earth Day essentials on our Earth Day Pinterest board. Check it out.

And, of course, there's no better way to celebrate Earth Day than by spending time outdoors. You can take a hike or go on a bike ride with your kids. Or, plant a garden, attend an Earth Day event, explore natural New Jersey, and start a compost (watch video to learn how).

How will you celebrate Earth Day?

About This Blog

There's nothing artificial in these blog posts from New Jersey's hardest-working women. Where to go, what to do, and how to do it—with kids—are all part of the mix.

Meet Our Bloggers!

Judy Grover is the editor of New Jersey Family and the mom of two rambunctious boys, who, she admits, completely run the household.

Anna Sandler lives happily ever after with her Jersey-raised husband and three NYC-born children in the land of jug handles and disco fries. She loves baking and crafting with her kids, even if everything they make doesn't turns out Pinterest-perfect. Anna has never met a holiday she doesn't want to celebrate, and enjoys sharing ideas for everyday fun (indoor beach party, anyone?), as well as how to commemorate bigger moments from birthdays to first days of school.

Renée Sagiv Riebling is a mom of two who never irons (Quick! Grab it out of the dryer while it's still hot instead!) or cooks anything that requires dicing, but she does love sweet sticky faces and family outings (check out her Jersey Jaunts column for ideas). She understands all too well about the minutiae of mothering, and her blog posts focus on parenting pointers--from experts or experience.
