Earth Day is this Sunday, April 22, and it's the perfect time to help your children learn more about recycling, upcycling, and taking steps to care for the planet. Here are a few environmentally friendly crafts and projects you can do to celebrate the day:
No need to use paper cups! The New York Mom shares how to add chalkboard paint to regular drinking glasses—write cheery messages to your kids or add each child's name to the glass so they use one glass per day! And, think of the fun you can have with these glasses at your next party!
Random Handprints (my blog) tells how to take old, broken crayons and repurpose them into fun-shaped new crayons (using muffin tins for molds). (Shown in photo.)
Craftaholics Anonymous has a tutorial for DIY bottle cap candles, made by recycling common household items, including crayons.
The Crafty Crow has lots of ideas for recycling crafts, including how to make recycled robots and how to create a terrarium.
Mom It Forward provides directions for creating bracelets from recycled belts, a fantastic project for tweens wanting to make a fashion statement.
Babalisme has a printable, illustrated Earth Day Pledge with blank spaces for kids to fill in their ideas about how to help care for the earth.

And, of course, there's no better way to celebrate Earth Day than by spending time outdoors. You can take a hike or go on a bike ride with your kids. Or, plant a garden, attend an Earth Day event, explore natural New Jersey, and start a compost (watch video to learn how).
