Researchers have identified an inner ear deficiency in autistic kids that may impact their ability to recognize speech.

In the study, recently published in the journal Autism Research, researchers used mini speakers and microphone earplugs to listen for signs of difficulty processing sounds. They also tested the hearing of kids six to 17, half of whom had autism. Those with the disorder had trouble hearing in a frequency important for processing speech.

Study leaders hope the noninvasive and inexpensive test can be used to screen infants and help identify causes of autism earlier.
