Challenge Island is a cross-curricular Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) enrichment program that provides kids 4-14+ with hands on fun and engaging learning experiences. Challenge Island has been providing STEAM enrichment programs since 2003 and has recently landed in Northern New Jersey.
In an ever-changing, increasing complex world, it’s more important than ever that the next generation is prepared to bring knowledge and skills to solve problems, make sense of information and know how to gather and evaluate evidence to make decisions. These are the kinds of skills that students develop in STEAM disciplines, which Challenge Island specializes in. When kids participate in Challenge Island programs, they are preparing for what lies ahead and ensuring that they will be equipped to handle the problems of the future.
The Challenge Island curriculum is unique because the students visit Islands and work together in Tribes to complete Challenges that demonstrate one or more STEAM concepts. The hands-on opportunities made available in Challenge Island ignite curiosity and spark learning by letting the students experiment in real-world situations, even for students who do not think of themselves as “math and science kids.” While working in their tribes to solve the challenges, the students apply engineering principles, Understand, Brainstorm, Build, Test, Improve, Retest, Improve Again, and Share. As a result, the students learn about communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity and public speaking.
Challenge Island provides after-school programs as well as in-school field trips and family workshops. With the in-school field trips and Scout workshops, we can take students on an action-packed island adventure without ever leaving school grounds! These high interest STEM and STEAM in-school field trips and workshops uniquely intertwine English Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies concepts into one action packed experience for students! We help educators pick the perfect challenge to meet the specific standards and goals they want to address in their classrooms and schools. And if you are looking for year-round STEAM programming, our vast array of topics and broad age range makes us an ideal outsourcing option.
In the after-school programs, the classroom is transformed to an island adventure for one hour per week for 8-14 weeks. These programs provide opportunities for open exploration, experimentation and lots of hands-on practice to complement the in-school learning experiences. When kids enter the Challenge Island classroom, they are transported to a learning environment worlds away from the regular school experience. Kids count down the seconds until Challenge Island day rolls around!
Our multi-generational family workshops are a perfect Family Night Out activity for your school community! This unique Challenge Island program brings families together as a unified tribe. Together they take on some of our most popular STEAM challenges centered around fun, family-friendly themes. Hosting a Challenge Island family workshop helps promote parent involvement in the schools while getting parents actively engaged in their children’s learning (both of which are proven to have a strong positive influence on student success).
