The group offers treatment for ADHD, grief, anxiety, depression, behavioral issues and substance use, and provides parental guidance and consultation/advocacy services for children with IEPs.
“We take an educational and collaborative approach to teach families how to apply what they learn in our offices to their everyday lives,” says Dr. Christopher Barker, executive director and a father of three.
Discovery Wellness Center is a family-friendly group practice that offers clinical services for children and families. "My daughter was diagnosed with ADHD in third grade. It took over 10 years to finally find the right medication that didn't give her insomnia, headaches, appetite and weight loss. Although she was doing so much better with her focus, she became depressed due to the belief that there was something wrong with her and she needed a pill to be "normal" - she is incredibly bright and witty. Dr. Barker explained and helped her to understand her ADHD and why it makes her special, especially in the places she excels in. They put together a daily regimen of exercises to help her focus and memory, and he also gave her some calming breathing techniques and coping mechanisms to help her fall asleep at night. I just feel that my daughter is now flourishing - she is now able to use what other people call a disability to her advantage. She continues to see Dr. Barker regularly as its one of the many things she looks forward to in her active week." -Michael, Florham Park
"My nephew had ODD and constantly questioned authority at school, and at home. Every therapist we had taken him to see he either said nothing or fought back. Dr. Barker provided a safe environment for my nephew and didn't make him feel pressured to talk about his issues on the first session. He took the time to get to know him, his likes and dislikes, his hobbies, what annoyed him and his triggers. Now it is no longer a fight every day to get him to school. We don't worry about getting a phone call in the middle of the day from the school. He still has a long way to go, but the improvements he's made with our nephew are remarkable - he loves going to see him now which is a miracle in itself." -Jackie, Livingston
"My sister genuinely feels comfortable and safe when talking to Dr. Barker. She never wants to miss a session with him. Not only does he have an extensive amount of experience and education in dealing with patients with mental health, he goes above and beyond to make sure your family member is welcomed. He was also highly recommended to my sister by other professionals in this field of work." -Christine, West Orange
"Dr. Skinder is warm, kind and has a great way about her with my son. She takes the time to listen not only to him, but to me when I voice my concerns. He loves coming to her and looks forward to it weekly. She's made such a difference in his behavior I've given other parents that I know her name and phone number so they may also send their children to her." -Donna, Livingston
