MKA is a Pre-K – 12 coed independent day school, with over 1,000 students housed on three age-appropriate campuses (Pre-K-3rd, 4th-8th, 9th-12th). MKA functions as one school through an articulated curriculum which includes unique Pre-K-12 Signature Programs: Ethics, Core Works, and The Writing Challenge, and a nationally recognized program for integrating technology, with 1:1 laptop learning for students in grades 4-12. Emphasis is placed on original research from the earliest years. The work of the faculty and lives of the students are shaped by a Mission Statement and the ideals of the MKA motto, “Knowledge, Vision, Integrity.”
Founded in 1887, MKA promotes and honors hard work, creativity, civility and generosity of spirit. The curriculum provides an array of academic, artistic, athletic and leadership opportunities within a diverse, dynamic and cohesive community.
MKA graduates attend the finest colleges and universities in the United States. In the class of 2010, 73% of students were admitted to their first choice college, and 89% of the class was admitted to colleges deemed “Most Highly Competitive” and “Highly Competitive” by Barrons Guide to Colleges.
MKA’s teachers are coaches, advisors, mentors, artists, scholars and athletes. Over 75% of the faculty holds advanced degrees and eleven have earned doctorates.
With 50 clubs and organizations appealing to diverse interests such as politics, the arts, fine dining and journalism, our students can pursue a passion, as well as develop essential team-building and leadership skills outside the traditional classroom setting. Students and faculty give back to the community through an extensive service learning program, and Upper School students have a community service graduation requirement.
Fine and performing arts opportunities include chorale, dance, string and jazz band ensembles, a 7th grade Shakespeare production, a winter musical, an Upper School movie, and art, sculpture and photography studios housed in a $3 million arts wing.
The Middle School offers a comprehensive interscholastic sports program and The Upper School fields 26 different Varsity teams and 15 JV teams, allowing students to play on a team that is appropriate to their skill level. As a member of the NJISAA, the NJSIAA, and the CHC, MKA teams and athletes are able to compete at the NJ Prep, Parochial State, Essex County, and League level. Since 2000, MKA has won over 100 team championships at the league, county, parochial and/or prep state levels. Currently, there are over 40 graduates playing on NCAA teams across the country.
MKA's Extended Day Program provides a supervised after-school program for students in grades Pre-K through eight. Summer offerings include STAR (Sports – Arts – Theatre – Recreation) Camp, an exciting experience for children in grades K through 8, Summer Skills for Success providing academic enrichment for students in grades 5-10, and Jazz Jam, an intensive week of professional music instruction.
(Primary School grades Pre-K-3, Middle School grades 4-8 and Upper School grades 9-12) in Montclair, NJ, 13 miles outside midtown Manhattan.
There are 175 faculty members; 80% hold advanced degrees and 13 hold doctorates. All benefit from MKA’s renowned faculty professional development opportunities that include individual professional growth plans and annual technology and ethics institutes.
Designated an Apple School of Distinction for 2013-15, MKA provides dynamic, effective tools to support curriculum and instruction, communication and professional development in ways that promote learning for today’s students. The use of technology as an effective teaching and learning tool is a key curricular and instructional focus. All faculty and all students in grades 4-12 are provided with individual MacBook Air laptops, together with an identical suite of software to ensure a common platform for instruction, while Primary School students have access to iPads, mobile laptop carts, and a Library technology space.
Educates students to be responsible citizens. The study of ethics and character formation, participation in public discourse, including the use of logic, debate and active care for language and a thorough grounding in American founding principles and documents, serve as the foundation of this program. The Character Education Partnership presented its National Award for Ethics to Montclair Kimberley Academy in 2003.
MKA fields 26 highly competitive varsity teams and 15 JV teams and offers an interscholastic athletic program at the Middle School. The school is a member of the Supper Essex Conference (SEC), the New Jersey Independent School Athletic Association (NJISAA) and the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA). In the past three years alone, MKA has garnered 42 team championships, with over 150 in the past 10 years. MKA athletes are regularly recruited to pursue their sport at the collegiate level.
