New Jersey’s premiere glass-arts Summer Camp!
GlassRoots is a seventeen year-old non-profit, glass-arts education studio located in the arts corridor of downtown Newark, one block from the Newark Museum and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.
GlassRoots offers a variety of beginner, intermediate and advanced lessons in glass-art making year-round to adults and kids, 10 years old and up, including one and two-week summer camp programs for kids ages 10 to 18 years old. Summer camps run from June 25th to August 10th and offer an introduction to three types of glass-art making. No experience necessary, except where noted:
Beadmaking: Molten Magic -- GlassRoots staff will guide you through the development of designs for beads and jewelry while introducing basic art and design concepts.
Creating with Flat Glass: Warm and Cold -- Often called "warm glass", you’ll learn the science and process of fusing, slumping and kiln casting glass. After an introduction to the kilns, create a "bas" or low relief tile in a glass kiln casting project.
Glassblowing, Beginner and Intermediate -- The art of glass blowing originated in the Middle East about 2000 years ago. In many ways, the tools and techniques used then are still used today! In this class, you’ll learn basic traditional postures, techniques and forms of blown glass. Ages 14 years old and up.
The Glass Volcano Experience -- In this camp teachers use molten glass to demonstrate the science and magic of a volcanic eruption! You’ll learn about obsidian, or “volcanic glass”, and work with fire and glass to simulate lava behavior.
