Description

Seven-time Grammy®-winning saxophonist Paul Winter's 23rd Annual Summer Solstice Sunrise Celebration will take place from 4:30 AM to 6:00 AM on Saturday, June 16 at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, 1047 Amsterdam Avenue at 112th St., New York, NY. The concert will take place under the 150-foot dome of the world’s largest Gothic cathedral. A musician’s and music lover’s dream, the Summer Solstice Celebration is a one-of-a-kind experience showcasing extraordinary musicianship in the awe-inspiring setting and titanic acoustics of the world’s largest Gothic cathedral. For this year’s performance, the Paul Winter Consort will be joined by special guests, vocalist Theresa Thomason and the 16-voice Pletenitsa Balkan Choir, conducted by Christiane Karam. “The Pletenitsa Choir captivated audiences at the Winter Solstice concert series in December, and I have since then dreamed of hearing their sublime, soulful sound in our early morning deep-listening journey in the magical acoustics of the Cathedral,” Winter says of the guest choir. Cellist Eugene Friesen, pianist Jeff Holmes, and Cathedral organist Raymond Nagem will also be featured at this year’s sunrise concert. The music will begin in total darkness and proceed into a continuous journey emanating from different places in the Cathedral. As the great stained-glass windows slowly begin to illuminate, the light joins the sound to carry us into the full dawning of the summer. There will be a tea and coffee reception following the concert. Tickets start at $40.
