This event occurs weekly, on Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Acts of Art and Rebuttal in 1971 at Hunter College presents ten of the 47 original artists included in the 1971 exhibition organized by the Black Emergency Cultural Coalition in response to the Whitney Museum’s refusal to appoint a black curator for their survey Contemporary Black Artists in America. The exhibition will open on Thursday, October 4th at 6:00 PM and run from Friday, October 5th until Sunday, November 25th at the Hunter College Art Galleries at 132 East 68th Street.
The exhibition at Hunter College includes artwork from the original 1971 show by Benny Andrews, Betty Blayton-Taylor, Vivian Browne, James Denmark, Cliff Joseph, Richard Mayhew, Dindga McCannon, Ademola Olugebefola, Haywood Bill Rivers, and Frank Wimberley. In addition to their paintings, prints, and collages, the exhibition includes a collection of posters, newspapers, mailers, and letters documenting the Acts of Art gallery, the Rebuttal show, and responses to it. Accompanying the ephemera is a 45-minute film by art historian Oakley N. Holmes, Jr. that documents the “Black Artists in America” panel held at the Art Students League in February 1971.
