Advocare The Orthopedic Center provides pediatric and adolescent patients with the highest quality of care for orthopedic issues stemming from sports injuries and problems related to the spine, bones, joints and muscles. One of the largest pediatric and adolescent orthopedic practices in the tri-state area, Advocare is affiliated with New York University Medical Center so its doctors can care for children locally at Morristown, Saint Barnabas and Overlook Medical Centers while taking advantage of NYU’s state-of-the-art resources.

“Our practice is unique because we’re able to offer the resources of a world-class care center at NYU but still continue our relationship with our patients and remain their physician,” says Dr. Mark Rieger, assistant professor at NYU Medical Center and founder of Advocare The Orthopedic Center.

The practice remains a pioneer in minimally invasive spine surgery and low-dose radiation techniques, including EOS, a state-of-the-art low dose X-ray machine for scoliosis patients that emits 10 times less radiation than standard X-rays. It’s the first of its kind to be used in New Jersey. Advocare also offers expanded evening and weekend walk-in hours and a smartphone app.

Known for his commitment to excellence among both patients and colleagues, Dr. Rieger’s expertise lies in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders that include scoliosis, sports injuries and fractures.

Dr. Rieger was the first surgeon in New Jersey to perform endoscopic spine surgery, use ultrasound to evaluate pediatric hip disorders and use the Ponseti technique to treat clubfeet non-surgically. He served as the first division chief of pediatric orthopedics at Morristown Medical Center.

“We treat our patients like family,” Dr. Rieger says. “We perform cutting-edge treatments to get kids back to the activities they love quickly and safely, but we also take the time to educate families on how to help prevent injuries from happening.”

Dr. David Lin has treated thousands of children with a variety of age-specific problems, and has a special interest in fracture/trauma care. An expert in the field of pediatric sports medicine, Dr. Lin is highly experienced in arthroscopically treating meniscal injuries and ACL tears in adolescents and teenagers. “It’s exciting to work with children—they keep me young at heart, and I love their resilience,” he says.

Dr. Joshua Strassberg specializes in pediatric and adolescent trauma, sports injuries and hip disorders. He is an expert in the latest arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgical procedures, including techniques for reconstructing the ACL in children. “I enjoy having the opportunity to relate to kids and make them feel at ease,” he says.

The doctors at Advocare The Orthopedic Center achieve the best possible outcome with the least amount of surgical intervention so that children can get back to their lives with minimal interruption. “The doctors on our team are sub-specialty trained so we can offer the highest level of expertise in treating everything from sports and spinal injuries to trauma,” Dr. Rieger says. “Returning kids back to their optimal level of health—and knowing we’ve made a difference in their lives—is the most rewarding thing about what we do.”

M. Darryl Antonacci, MD, FACS • Randal R. Betz, MD • Laury A. Cuddihy, MD

The physicians at the Institute for Spine and Scoliosis, PA are pioneers and leaders in the field of scoliosis, both nationally and internationally. Drs. M. Darryl Antonacci, Randal R. Betz and Laury A. Cuddihy routinely treat patients from as far as Germany, England, Singapore, Sweden, Canada, Mexico and many states.

“We are a world-class practice of scoliosis surgeons treating local New Jersey families along with parents and children with scoliosis from all over the world,” Dr. Antonacci says.

Drs. Antonacci, Betz and Cuddihy provide comprehensive surgical care for scoliosis, with a focus on pediatric scoliosis and spondylolisthesis. Dr. Antonacci combines his vast surgical expertise and experience to provide less-invasive treatment options that optimize recovery times and outcomes for young patients. Board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, he is among a select group of doctors worldwide with the expertise to perform anterior muscle-sparing scoliosis surgery.

“It’s very rewarding to know that our treatments make such a huge impact in children’s lives,” Dr. Antonacci says. “Kids have a natural innocence, and seeing how brave and strong they are when facing these obstacles that life has thrown their way makes us want to be stronger for them.”

Dr. Antonacci performs anterior muscle sparing, less invasive techniques and is pioneering advancements in scoliosis surgery which drastically reduce recovery times. His surgeries are cutting-edge.

Dr. Antonacci has a distinguished academic and medical resume, and has studied and taught at some of the world’s most prestigious universities for spinal surgery. Drs. Antonacci, Betz and Cuddihy provide surgical treatment that restores function of the spine with more natural contour and movement, and their surgical methods are less invasive than traditional approaches—with significantly faster recoveries that do not require blood transfusion.

“Patients return to full activity in just six weeks, with most returning to school after four weeks. There are less than a handful of surgeons worldwide who can do this,” he explains. “In contrast, traditional scoliosis surgeries have recovery times of about six to nine months and, many times, require blood transfusion.”

A contributing member of the most prestigious spine and scoliosis associations, Dr. Antonacci maintains positions as clinical assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center, and an attending physician in the department of orthopaedic surgery at Saint Peter’s University Children's Hospital.

He is honored to be among the few individuals worldwide to have twice received the prestigious Russell Hibbs Award for Research from the Scoliosis Research Society in 2001 and 2003. A diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners, he is a Fellow of several professional organizations including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, American College of Surgeons, Scoliosis Research Society and Cervical Spine Research Society, and he is an active member of the North American Spine Society.

“We love interacting with families and children in the office and being there for them every step of the way throughout the surgery process and on their road to recovery,” he says.

 The Advanced Spine Center

Jason E. Lowenstein, MD

A board certified, fellowship-trained spine surgeon, Dr. Jason Lowenstein is committed to taking a conservative approach when working with young patients dealing with scoliosis, kyphosis, spondylolisthesis and sports-related injuries of the spine. He develops balanced treatment plans to manage his patients’ spinal issues.

“Early diagnosis is extremely important when it comes to making treatment decisions, so we focus on tailoring treatment options for each individual patient as early as possible,” says the father of three.

Taking a Team Approach

As the director of scoliosis and spinal deformity at Morristown Medical Center/Goryeb Children’s Hospital, Dr. Lowenstein offers families his expertise and training in all aspects of adult and pediatric spine surgery.

“I always take a team approach when working with patients,” he says. “I want children and families to play an active role in the treatment process.”

He specializes in the treatment of spinal deformity, including scoliosis, kyphosis, and spondylolisthesis. Dr. Lowenstein is a leader in the use of minimally-invasive spine surgery to treat spinal deformity. He has extensive experience in treating disc herniations and stenosis of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, and utilizes endoscopic techniques as well as artificial disc replacement for treatment of these disorders. Dr. Lowenstein has a particular interest in complex revision surgery for the treatment of failed back syndrome or for patients who have had previous spinal deformity surgery and require further surgical intervention.

“Scoliosis surgery isn’t always a ‘one and done’ process; I see many patients who have had surgery but continue to require additional care, and we’re available to patients at all stages of development—from childhood to early adulthood and beyond,” he says. “We continue to follow our patients throughout their lives to provide total continuity of care.”

Choosing the Non-Invasive Treatment Option

When managing patients with scoliosis, Dr. Lowenstein believes in pursuing all non-surgical options first, such as brace treatment or the Schroth method of scoliosis-specific exercises, with the goal of improving posture, eliminating pain and preventing curve progression. Dr. Lowenstein will utilize intraoperative CT-guidance paired with computer-assisted navigation to offer patients less invasive surgeries with smaller incisions and faster recoveries.

“I choose the least invasive approach whenever possible,” he says. “When surgery is necessary, I often utilize minimally-invasive techniques to make the treatment process easier and reduce recovery time for my patients.”

Helping Patients Return to Normal Activities

A member of the Scoliosis Research Society, North American Spine Society and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Dr. Lowenstein studied neuroscience and graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania. He earned his medical degree at the University of Pittsburgh, and performed his orthopedic surgery residency at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University Medical Center. He completed a fellowship in adult and pediatric spine and scoliosis surgery at Emory University Hospital. Dr. Lowenstein currently practices at Morristown Medical Center, Saint Barnabas Medical Center and Overlook Medical Center.

“We take a variety of different approaches to streamline our scoliosis and spinal treatments and make them as minimally invasive as possible,” he says. “It’s always our goal to help our patients of all ages return to their normal activities as quickly as possible.”

Atlantic Health System

Vivek Natarajan, MD

A pediatric orthopedist for Goryeb Children’s Hospital, part of Atlantic Health System, Dr. Vivek Natarajan believes in treating every patient as if he or she were a member of his own family. Dr. Natarajan is in private practice at Advocare The Orthopedic Center, which provides pediatric and adolescent patients with the highest quality of care for injuries and disorders of the musculoskeletal system.

“Most of the doctors in our group have children of their own, so we can relate to the anxiety parents feel when their child breaks a bone or is diagnosed with a condition like scoliosis,” says the father of a one-year-old son.

When working with families at Goryeb Children’s Hospital, Dr. Natarajan always takes the time to speak with both his patients and their parents honestly, clearly and compassionately, and involves kids and teenagers in their treatment as much as possible.

“We strive to convey complex conditions and treatment strategies as simply as possible, so everyone can understand exactly what’s going on and the entire family can be involved in the treatment process,” he says.

A board-eligible pediatric orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Natarajan’s clinical specialties include treatment of muscular skeletal injuries, sports medicine, overuse injuries, trauma injuries and spinal injuries. He has a special interest in the development and use of innovative nonoperative treatments for scoliosis. Other conditions treated within the practice include complex medical conditions like spina bifida and cerebral palsy in addition to pediatric hip disorders, ACL and meniscal tears, joint injuries and clubfoot.

“From our physical therapists and brace specialists to our highly-trained doctors and nurses, we strongly believe in the importance of a multi-disciplinary team approach to treating common conditions like scoliosis,” he says.

The doctors rely on their advanced training, continuing education and cutting-edge technology to provide non-invasive, non-operative treatment options for children whenever possible, including a state-of-the-art X-ray machine for scoliosis patients that emits 10 times less radiation than standard X-rays. It’s the first of its kind to be used in New Jersey.

“Children with scoliosis require a lot of X-rays as they continue to grow, and we share parents’ concerns about the amount of radiation that occurs with multiple X-rays…so this is truly an amazing technology that we’re excited to be able to offer to our patients,” Dr. Natarajan says.

Dr. Natarajan combines his background in engineering with a passion for helping kids return to their favorite sports and activities as quickly and safely as possible. After receiving his undergraduate degree from Columbia University, Dr. Natarajan earned his doctorate in medicine at Emory University before completing his residency at Oregon Health and Science University and pediatric orthopedic fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. He also treats patients at Atlantic Health System’s Overlook Medical Center.

“I’ve always had an interest in building and fixing things, and I’ve always loved working with kids, so pediatric orthopedics has been a great fit,” he says. “It’s incredibly rewarding to help kids enjoy their childhood years to the fullest, both on and off the playing field.”

A board certified pediatric dentist, Dr. Tyra Manso combines her passions for science and art in her modern dental practice. The office is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and eco-friendly options, including allergen-free products and an in-office water filtration system.

The practice’s bright, soothing office atmosphere helps put kids at ease, and is complete with iPads, a Lego wall and the Growing Smiles Club to reward patients with prizes for being committed to preventive dentistry.

“We make kids part of the treatment process from the beginning, so they never have a chance to feel anxious,” says the mother of one, who also lives in Montclair.

Dr. Manso earned a BS in chemistry from the University of Illinois, and earned her DDS from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. She completed her pediatric dental residency at Lutheran Medical Center.

Dedicated to giving back, Dr. Manso provides dental care to underserved children as a medical mission volunteer, and visits local schools to teach kids about oral health.

Tenafly Pediatrics, P.A.

Since its inception more than 40 years ago, Tenafly Pediatrics has provided the highest quality of pediatric health care. Recently certified as a patient-centered medical home, the practice is comprised of 27 board certified pediatricians who provide individualized, compassionate care in six locations throughout northern New Jersey.

“Kids love us because of the fun, friendly office environment, and parents appreciate our accessibility,” Dr. David Schaumberger says.

Tenafly Pediatrics’ child-friendly offices have separate “sick” and “well” waiting rooms. Each office offers convenient hours, on-line booking, walk-in hours and same-day appointments to accommodate their patients’ busy schedules. The doctors take the time to listen to patients and their parents to provide the optimal level of care and service.

“Our physicians received their training at some of the most renowned medical schools in the country,” Dr. Schaumberger says. “And now that former patients are bringing their own children to see us, it’s a true testament to what we’ve been doing for the past 40 years.”
