Don’t have the budget to travel over the holiday break? Skip the flight and have a great time with the kiddos with these affordable ideas.

• Spend an hour or two swimming instead of breaking the bank at a water park. Many local hotels have pools available for day-pass guests, or you can finally put your YMCA membership to use.

•  Have an all-day movie fest, complete with PJs and popcorn. Rent from Redbox or queue up Netflix, and make the experience authentic with homemade ticket stubs.

•  Head to New York City to see the holiday lights. The decorated windows and skating rinks stay open through the new year.

•  Visit your local bookstore or the library to have the kids choose a book. Then spend a tech-free afternoon at home, curled up under blankets with books in hand.
