We’ve all done it— “watched” our kids at the park as we’ve texted a friend or chatted with other parents. But it’s important to stay focused as they climb on the jungle gym. A recent study reported on by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) found children are more likely to pull risky moves at the playground when their caregivers are distracted. Thirty percent of kids did something dangerous like push others, jump off moving swings, go down the slide head-first and throw sand. Cellphones and technology were blamed for 30 percent of incidents, and talking with other adults accounted for 33 percent. In all, more than 200,000 kids ages 14 and younger are treated in US emergency rooms each year for playground-related injuries, says the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
