Keep Bike Rides Safe

These tips will keep you at ease while she's out freewheeling with her friends.

• Make sure her bike fits properly. That means she can place the balls of both feet on the ground and stand on flat feet with a one-inch clearance to the handlebars.

• A helmet should be worn on every ride. Make sure it’s placed squarely on top of the head (not tipped back) and covers the top of the forehead with the chin strap adjusted snugly.

• Teach her the rules of the road. That means riding with traffic, not against (about a quarter of all collisions occur when cyclists ride against traffic), learning hand signals and never riding at dusk or after dark.
