How to Find the Right Concealer

Whether you’re looking to brighten dark circles or reduce redness, finding the right concealer for your skin is key. But how do you make sense of the sea of choices at drugstores and beauty counters? We asked Garden State makeup artists to share their favorite products for the most common skin challenges.

THE PROBLEM: Dark Under Eye Circles

PRO TIP

“Lean toward a concealer with a peachier tinge if you have a fair skin tone,” says Alexa Prisco, a Hoboken-based makeup artist better known as the Glam Fairy. “If you have dark purple and blue circles under your eyes, you’re going to want to counteract them with an orange tint since that’s on the opposite side of the color wheel and works for most other skin tones.”

THE PROBLEM: Adult Acne

PRO TIP

“Adult acne is best tackled using a concealer with a blemish treatment like salicylic acid built into it,” says Daniela Musano, the owner of Araya Rebirth, a makeup, massage therapy and skin care studio in Ridgewood. “The acid fights off bacteria and helps acne go away quicker.”

“Use your ring finger for application; it has the lightest pressure and will help warm up the product so it can go on smoother,” suggests Cali Mazariego, a makeup artist at Depasquale’s the Spa in Morris Plains.

PRO TIP

“Start at the bottom corner of your eye and apply light pressure and continue towards the other end to help lymphatic drainage,” recommends Michele Blanco, an aestheticians at Depasquale’s. “You can also apply mint tea bags or sliced cucumbers under your eyes to help reduce inflammation.”
