Frozen Yogurt: Cool FroYo Shops in New Jersey You Don't Want to Miss

Ten must-visit frozen yogurt stores in New Jersey

froyoIt seems that every week a new frozen yogurt place opens up nearby—not that I'm complaining, of course. Here are 10 must-visit frozen yogurt stores in New Jersey, many of them self-serve, where you pay by the ounce.

Bloomingdale's: My personal favorite going back to childhood. Many still find Bloomie's to be the frozen yogurt standard to which all others are judged. You can decide for yourself at Forty Carrots restaurant on level 3 of Bloomingdale's in The Mall at Short Hills.

Creations: This dessert-go-to location has everything from frozen yogurt to smoothies to bubble tea to acai and pitaya bowls. With seasonal flavors like pumpkin, pineapple and peppermint bar, there’s always a reason to give Creations a visit.

Cups Frozen Yogurt: Decked out in purple and green, this froyo location invites guests to “fill their cup” with over a dozen flavors on rotation. With four locations in NJ and a few popping up in New York, Cups packs a punch with their unique flavor choices and plunkly attitude.

RedBerry Frozen Yogurt & Smoothies: If you have college kids trying to eat “healthy,” you’ve come to the right place. Redberry has a location right outside of The College of New Jersey and offers daily student discounts on their dozen froyo flavors and refreshing smoothies. Redberry also has a location in Plainsboro.

Kravings Frozen Yogurt: This new treat spot in Red Bank opened in February of 2012 and boasts flavors like Root Beer Float, Snickerdoodle, and York Peppermint Pattie, and offers an array of candy, cereal, and fruit toppings.

Red Mango: With more than five locations in NJ, these sleek stores are a favorite for many. Most locations are self-serve, but a few are not. Red Mango claims "no artificial sweeteners" (meaning no high-fructose corn syrup), all-natural, nonfat or lowfat, kosher, and certified gluten-free.

Strawberry Fields: This chain opened its first store in Maplewood in August of 2011. They offer self-serve soft-serve with lots of delicious toppings. Current locations in Maplewood, Morristown, and Union.

Sweet Orange: This place arrived in Summit in July of 2011. This store, which is not part of a chain, has self-serve frozen yogurt in 16 varieties as well as more than 50 toppings, from fresh raspberries to gummy bears and Reese's Peanut Butter.

TCBY: One of the first of the frozen yogurt chains, and currently celebrating 37 years in business, TCBY has three locations throughout NJ. In addition to the many flavors of soft-serve frozen yogurt to choose from, perhaps best of all, this is one place where it's hand swirled by someone besides you.

Twist Yogurt: Billed as "yogurt without limits," this fun "self-serve frozen yogurt lounge" in Princeton has comfy seating, wi-fi, TV, games, and local art, as well as seven varieties of self-serve frozen yogurt, vegan sorbet, smoothies, and more than 50 topping options.

Yogart Frozen Yogurt Studio: This Edgewater locations boasts “every cup is a work of art.” With toppings like italian rainbow layer cookies, fresh fruit and even cereal, this artisanal restaurant definitely takes froyo to the next level. Try their belgian waffles, Yogart smoothies or have your froyo and toppings twisted together with their Artwist options.

Yogurtland: Though they have more than 100 shops nationally, the only NJ outposts are in Denville and Hamilton. With a "you rule" mission, Yogurtland wants customers to have "control, choice, and creativity" in their yogurt, so all shops are self-serve. With flavors like Devil's Food Cupcake Batter and Guava Pineapple Tart, I may need to make the trek!
