Early reading boosts intelligence scores, say researchers at the University of Edinburgh. A study that compared reading and intelligence scores in identical twins at ages 7, 9, 10, 12 and 16 found that the twin with the strongest early reading skills typically scored higher in both verbal and non-verbal intelligence tests later in life. In 2013, New Jersey eighth grade reading scores ranked sixth in the nation, according to the National Assessment of Education Progress.
