If your kids are over the wooden paneling and worn shoes of your local lanes, they’ll fall in love with this revitalized bowling alley/music venue hybrid.

Asbury Lanes, a legendary 1960s alley in Asbury Park, is reopening with a whole new look this summer come Memorial Day weekend. The Lanes were on the verge of completely falling apart, but thanks to iStar’s takeover, it’ll get a major facelift and become an international music venue, bowling spot and dining highlight.

Back in the ‘60s, Asbury opened with 18 lanes. With the wave of aspiring creatives that came to the shoretown in the early 2000s, it became a hub for alternative music and local arts. Over the years, the Lanes have hosted bands like The Bouncing Souls and Mick Jones of The Clash.

While the original capacity of the venue was 300, the reconstructed spot will be able to house more than double. The space will have tons of new features, but the restoration will also preserve many original elements and fixtures, like a wall completely covered in rock posters, a famous ocean-maid mural painted by a local Asbury Park artist and the signature bowling pin sign.

Brunswick, a bowling machinery company, made a one-of-a-kind custom pin-setting system for The Lanes with a back-to-the-future theme. The Jersey signature touch, though, is the classic diner inside, complete with a retro neon sign.

If you want to stay the night once you visit, try booking a room at The Asbury Hotel next door, which has been ranked the best new hotel in a USA Today poll.
