American Girl’s highly anticipated 2017 Girl of the Year is an amazing role model—a creative force who uses her passion for the arts to break down barriers.  Gabriela McBride, a gorgeous 18-inch doll with curly brown hair and fun outfits, uses spoken word poetry to overcome her personal struggle with stuttering. Gabriela is a poet with many creative talents, including dancing and deejaying. (Enter for a chance to win one now!

Her story is told in three books written by Teresa E. Harris and published by Scholastic. Her love of the arts comes from growing up in a family of creatives, but her love for spoken word is rooted in her realization that it helps her speak more confidently and with ease. Gabriela’s journey to find her voice not only strengthens her self-esteem, but also galvanizes her to save her community’s arts center from being destroyed. We love this girl!

American Girl’s partnership with Scholastic is promoting Express Yourself, a custom school curriculum program for 3rd-5th graders that teaches kids how to use poetry as a means of self-expression. The related free teaching materials hit Scholastic’s website on March 1, and include lessons, activities, a poster and parenting tips for both the classroom and home. And in April, the program will feature a student poetry contest (just in time for National Poetry Month!).
