If your go-tos in the Bronx have been Yankee Stadium and the Bronx Zoo, it’s time to add another destination to your list. The Bronx Children’s Museum is slated to get its first brick and mortar locale (a whopping 12,800-square-foot spot) in 2018. Work started this July at Mill Pond Park where an older powerhouse facility once stood, hence the museum’s theme of power and its unifying qualities.

This groundbreaking project is meant for infants through age 9 to learn about diversity, the environment and the world at large. Though the museum’s first location is opening next year, the BCM was founded in 2005 and is still the singular institution of its kind in the borough. A lack of a concrete location hasn’t stopped the museum from helping Bronx kids every year; mobile programs get hands-on learning experiences to families in the area. While this is awesome, the facility that’s being built sounds great, too. The museum will boast open-themed areas for science, art, culture and early learners, interactive activities exploring sustainability, natural resources plus the Bronx and studio space for meetings and birthdays.

Visitors will learn about everything from habitats in the Harlem River to community gardening. Kids will also get to meet with local artists, and even showcase their work on-site and online after participating in new exhibits and projects. For more information, go to bronxchildrensmuseum.org.
