A New Butterfly House at Tenafly Nature Center Is Now Open!

World of Wings fans, rejoice! After the popular children’s museum in Teaneck closed last year, the opportunity to get up-close and personal with butterflies didn’t seem possible. But thanks to Tenafly’s Nature Center, spending quality time with some beautiful butterflies is within reach in north Jersey.

The nature center opened its doors this past Saturday, and according to NorthJersey.com, it's debuting five different butterfly species. Among them is the monarch, whose population has decreased by 90 percent over the past 20  years. The population decline makes this exhibit an important destination for New Jerseyans.

The Center’s mission is to educate visitors and create an immersive experience. The butterfly house emphasizes the importance of metamorphosis, life cycles and the ecosystem. The 12x24’ glass enclosure will contain at least 75 butterflies, including common buckeyes and painted ladies.

With the help of nectar-dipped feeding sticks, which attract the butterflies, kids can get a closer look at these winged beauties. (It also makes for a pretty awesome photo op!) Plus, check out the chrysalis box, and maybe you’ll be lucky enough to witness an emergence.

The butterfly house will close in October (date depends on weather), so make sure to plan your trip sooner rather than later. The house is open Wednesday-Sunday, from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Members get in free, but non-members must pay $5 for one adult and two kids. Additional kids are $5, but that money will admit up to three extra children.
